If you’re like me, finding the right size for your child is quite difficult, especially if they are larger or smaller than the average size. In my case, my son is an extremely healthy baby and I didn’t know what to expect. As a newborn my son was eleven pounds and 24 inches tall! I mean the boy was huge! Almost all of the clothes we received from our family and friends did not fit them because they were expecting an average size child. Also, I couldn’t really understand the size chart because they were labeled with age instead of actual sizes! Although the sizes are labeled infant/toddler age, we really had no idea how big the sizes were and if it would fit our overgrown son. It was a hassle to ask the store clerk every time. And I’m sure there are plenty of parents with kids who are larger or smaller than the average size chart. So, I decided to write an article about the size of children according to their age, weight and height. Hopefully this will help other new parents like me. It’s hard enough raising a child for the first time let alone having to worry and spend money on clothes that barely fit your children.
BABY SIZES
As mentioned above, we had a hard time finding clothes and wasted a lot of gifts (we ended up donating them to the Good Will and Salvation Army) that we received from our family and friends. In hindsight, our son was already 3-6 months old in terms of clothing sizes! If only all clothing brands had height and weight in their clothing sizes, our lives would have been so much less stressful.
o Newborn – weight: 5-8 lbs., height: less than 21.5 inches. high
or 3 months – weight: 8-12.5 lbs., height: less than 21.5-24 in. high
or 6 months – weight: 12.5-16.5 lbs., height: less than 24-26.5 inches. high
or 9 months – weight: 16.5-20.5 lbs., height: less than 26.5-28.5 inches. high
or 12 months – weight: 20.5-24.5 lbs., height: less than 28.5-30.5 inches. high
or 18 months – weight: 24.5-27.5 lbs., height: less than 30.5-32.5 inches. high
or 24 months – weight: 27.5-30 lbs., height: less than 32.5-34 in. high
SIZES FOR CHILDREN
It is confusing to determine if your child is a toddler or a baby. Also, some brands label sizes as toddler instead of infant when they cross certain thresholds. Ages that are classified as toddlers are typically 12 months to 3 years. It would make sense to have a universal size chart for all clothing brands, but in reality this is not always the case.
o Size 1/2T – Chest: 19 inches, Waist: 19 inches, Height: 28 inches, Weight: 19 – 21 lbs.
o Size 1T – Chest: 20 inches, Waist: 19.5 inches, Height: 31 inches, Weight: 21 – 23 lbs.
o Size 2T – Chest: 21 inches, Waist: 20 inches, Height: 34 inches, Weight: 24 – 28 lbs.
o Size 3T – Chest: 22″, Waist: 20.5″, Height: 37″, Weight: 28-32 lbs.
o Size 4T – Chest: 23 inches, Waist: 21 inches, Height: 40 inches, Weight: 32 – 36 lbs.
CHILDREN SIZES
If your child is abnormally large like mine, you would probably have to find a size larger than toddlers.
o Size 1 – Chest: 19 inches, Waist: 19.5 inches, Height: 31 inches, Weight: 19 – 21 lbs.
o Size 2 – Chest: 21 inches, Waist: 20 inches, Height: 34 inches, Weight: 24 – 28 lbs.
o Size 3 – Chest: 22 inches, Waist: 20.5 inches, Height: 37 inches, Weight: 28 – 32 lbs.
o Size 4 – Chest: 23 inches, Waist: 21 inches, Height: 40 inches, Weight: 37 – 41 pounds.
o Size 5 – Chest: 24 inches, Waist: 21.5 inches, Height: 43 inches, Weight: 42-46 lbs.
o Size 6 – Chest: 25 inches, Waist: 22 inches, Height: 46 inches, Weight: 47 – 53 lbs.
o Size 6X – Chest: 25.5 inches, Waist: 22.5 inches, Height: 48 inches, Weight: 54 – 58 lbs.
There you have it guys! I hope this makes your new parenthood easier than mine. Although the item may seem small to the average adult who is not a parent, it is very important to know what sizes to buy for your children.
ADVICE
A great tip is to keep track of your child’s growth. Whenever my wife takes our son to the doctor, she will remember his height, weight, etc. Keeping track of his size has saved us a lot of headaches when choosing clothes for him.
