Increased Mobility in People with Disabilities with Adaptive Equipment for Vehicles

From experience, overcoming a “handicap” is difficult at first. Once you learn to live with it and do the day-to-day tasks, it’s like second nature. It seems that technology does not limit those with limitations as it was in decades past. Assistive technology provides independence to run errands or keep farmers and industrial employees active at work. A physical limitation no longer means collecting disability; you can, but people continue to work, which only increases self-esteem. Trust me.

Vehicle adaptive kits keep people active and no longer dependent on someone else driving. Getting into vehicles higher off the ground is easier for people with physical disabilities, which may mean adding a new means of entry to a minivan, for example. Implementing adaptive equipment in a mini van can redesign the vehicle with features including:

Side entrance:

==> Lower floor from the front of the driver and passenger seats to the rear bench seat, power fold-down ramp and power auto-kneel system Lower driver’s side sliding door sill for a driver’s seat driver and front passenger easy-out, with undercarriage for spare tire storage.

Rear entrance:

==> The drop down ramp is at the rear of the vehicle.
==> With hoisting equipment, the driver controls the entry and exit of a motorized cart. Adaptive equipment makes it easy for people to travel comfortably and easily with their modes of transportation.

Truck Conversions:

==> Driver adaptable, but modifications include wheelchair lifts and computerized driving aids.

Other types of devices include driving aids, lifting and loading devices, and assertive technology. Driving aids help people get behind the wheel and fully control the car. Driving aids come in a variety of packages that are comfortable for the driver and their ability. Loading and lifting devices elevate the scooters onto the vehicle electrically, making it easy to transport wheelchairs and scooters. There are also chargers that help passengers or drivers get into the vehicle if it is difficult to get in and out of.

Modifications on farm equipment or industrial machinery are just as important as on an everyday vehicle. The limitations prevent people from thinking that they can work and that is not the case. Workers can use lifts to get in and out of the vehicle and use driving aids to control equipment. Same concept, different context.

People with disabilities may use material handling tools, tractors, shop tools, livestock and pets, outdoor mobility, or ATVs. However, as I said before, it doesn’t feel like a disability after a while.

Take advantage of what technology has to offer. Run errands freely or tend to the farm as you please. It’s a possibility these days.
