Surprise your wife with a great gift: how to buy her jewelry that she will love

Whether it’s their anniversary, their birthday, or for no reason, women love jewelry. Buying jewelry for your wife is usually a pretty safe bet when you’re not sure what else to buy for her. If the jewelry counter is confusing and overwhelming and you have no idea what to do with that special lady, here are some good tips.

  • Get your digits: Not! Not those digits! Hopefully, since she’s your wife, you already have her phone number. What you should have bought may not be your ring size. Knowing the size of your wife’s ring is very important. If you are embarrassed or afraid to ask what your ring size is, try to secretly borrow a ring that you know fits you and take it to jewelers so they can measure it for you. If there’s no way you can get close to any of her rings without her knowing, try asking her family and friends for help.
  • Know what you like: Unfortunately for you, jewelry is not a cut and dry thing that you can just walk in and pick something up. There are different types of metals (gold, silver, white gold); different cuts of diamonds (princess, pear, heart); and different stones (diamonds, rubies, emeralds). When you and your wife are running errands, let her examine the jewelry boxes and make a note of what she likes. Another great way to find out what you like is to take a look at the jewelry you already have.
  • What is the occasion: If you are buying jewelry for an anniversary, you may want to use it to choose your gift. Each anniversary is associated with some type of stone or metal. For example, if you are married for 25 years, it is customary to give money. If you’re unsure, ask your local jeweler for help or search online for a list of symbolic anniversary stones. This will not only help you make up your mind, but it will show your wife that you have really thought about her gift.
  • What’s hot: Even if we often don’t admit it, women like trendy things. Just as clothing trends change, so do jewelry trends. Take note of what women are wearing in your office, in the cafeteria, or in line at the grocery store. If you’re still not sure, ask a few friends about what’s hot and what’s not in jewelry today.
  • Be classic: Although trends come and go, classic jewelry can last a lifetime. Things like pearl necklaces, diamond earrings, tennis bracelets and claddagh rings (those Irish rings with the hands, the heart and the crown) will always be in style in one way or another. They are also great accessories for a night out on the town or maybe even a ceremony to renew your vows.
  • It is the intention that counts: Although it is not always true, as long as you choose something sensible, your wife will love what you choose. To play it safe, stay away from jewelry that is super cheap or extremely eccentric unless you know she will like it.
