Where do you start when choosing a custom home?

As you drive by houses, it’s easy to fall in love with the look of this or that one. You may even find the big block ugly and to you it has absolutely no curb appeal. Doing this is so common and so easy and it is very difficult to focus on other things when house hunting. However, if you saw the block house floor plans, you might fall in love with them and think that others are uncomfortable. The goal is to find one that you like to look at but also has an amazing floor plan. The fact is, the floor plan is actually the most important part of choosing a home. If you’re thinking of looking at southern house plans because you like that style, then that’s a good place to start, but try to keep an open mind. You may find that the floor plans you look at in that style just don’t live up to your expectations. You may find something while looking at contemporary house plans if you leave yourself open to it.

Sometimes we get so locked into an idea that we don’t leave our options open. When looking for a house to build, unless you have a plan in mind, it may be to your advantage to look for a variety of different styles. You might want that cottage with a white picket fence and if you’re going to be living in an East Coast neighborhood, that might be a good dream. However, if you’re open to other options, log cabin house plans may actually have a floor plan that you’ll love. Try to imagine yourself and your family in the three dimensional plan if you can.

While looking at the plans, some things to consider include whether you want a formal and informal living room. If you can run through both visualizations in your mind, think about what you and your family would do if you had that room. The same goes for entertainment areas and what you would do about having a television, a sound system, and seating around the room. How about a pool table or a ping pong table? Is a foundation an option and would it be finished?

This process should be used as your walk around the house. How does the master bedroom look and feel? Do you need a fancy bathtub or would you rarely use it? What about the children’s rooms? You can even imagine the color of the rooms. Speaking of children, do you need a dressing room? What will be stored in the garage?

The kitchen is usually the center of the house. How big do you want it? How gourmet cook are you or do you want to be? This is the fun part, so go over as many plans as possible. It doesn’t hurt to look at things that have never attracted you. You may be surprised.
