Google Apps opens up to third-party apps and services

Google Apps is always regularly updated with new features. The cool new feature is the ability to add additional services on top of the standard offering of Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and others. There are several great tools available in Google Labs and more are sure to appear as time goes on. Currently there is a good website bookmarking service, a forum/support center (Moderator). There is also a very useful tool for version control and bug tracking.

There is also the possibility of adding services created with Google App Engine. But here’s the really sweet part; developers can implement their own services integrated with applications, the possibilities here are endless. All that is needed is the application’s public key to add a new service.

There are also some interesting services available from Google partners, some are free and some are subscription based. The most notable free app I’ve come across so far has to be Xoopit, which manages attachments and makes finding attachments simple, among many other cool features. Previously, additional third-party Google Apps services were only available to Premier edition of apps and not to users of Free edition of apps. I hope we’ll see more cool apps coming from Google Labs. There’s also the Salesforce CRM integration, it’s not particularly well integrated and a bit confusing, it may suit some organizations, but the Docs and Gmail integration could be improved, especially before delivering money for a subscription to the sales force service.

The combination of the ability to build apps that integrate with the Google Apps suite and the newly opened API for programmatically writing Google Docs opens up an endless possibility for document management solutions such as billing and other similar automated documents.
