Although the bags may seem bulky and heavy due to their superior size, it is this fact that makes them so attractive in the first place. The inclination for early handbags dates back to 1944 with LL Bean’s introduction of the Boat Bag, aimed at the boating crowd. The simple but functional design quickly caught on and designers started building different versions to make them more modern. So, handbags merged with the luggage market, and the leather overnight bag became a worldwide sensation.

In the 1950s, handbags became more popular and gained momentum due to their practicality. As women began to need more things, the tote bag was perfect to meet these needs.

In the 1960s, Coach, a famous brand designed by Bonnie Cashin. This created a fashion fervor, and millions upon thousands were sold almost immediately after hitting fashion shelves. In the ’90s, designer Kate Spade used ultra-feminine designs and made the tote bag an essential yet fashionable bag for ladies of all ages. Like any successful fashion item, the Kate Spade tote bag has been imitated in hundreds of variations and is now a staple among women everywhere.

A good tote bag can accommodate all your essentials without looking too heavy. The interior compartments can be used to hold smaller items like keys and wallets, while the main body can hold all of your other items. The classic tote bag will always have a similar shape; what would change would probably be the materials and designs. It will remain an essential item for a long time.
