How to do a professional dubstep drop

Many people are looking for the perfect Dubstep Drop, but they find themselves stuck. Are there any secrets or techniques that can help you refine your fall? After going through hundreds of forums and blogs, we have come to a conclusion; everyone has their own technique.

However, even though they all have their own technique, we have found some similarities between all of them that can help you when you are creating your next drop.

What is a drop?

If you don’t know what a drop is, the first part of the article must have been very confusing. In essence, a dip is simply the moment right after an accumulation has occurred. A build-up is the part of a song where it looks like the music is going to reach some sort of climax. For Dubstep, that climax is called “drop,” where suddenly Pandora’s robotic box opens and all the cybernetic demons spill into existence.

For the decay to really impact the listener, it is important to build it correctly. Many producers start by doubling down on their hi-hats, popping a couple of inverted cymbals with lots of reverb, and then using the silence to build anticipation.

The idea is to create an overload of well-placed sounds that leads to a split second of silence before the hurricane breaks loose. Whatever you decide to do to make the build more meaningful is up to you, play around with the basses and kicks to really get your listener’s heart pumping, then take it all off and give them a triple dose of the drop.

The drop

When you fall, try to hit it hard and make the swinging bass really do the talking during this time. The fall itself is the strongest feature of the genre and therefore requires a lot of detail. You’ll still want to tie in some melodic elements that you used before the drop, but you’ll want to change it in such a way that it fits with the drop.

The drop will also have a stronger rhythm line. You’ll have to play with your loops to find the right combination to increase the intensity of the track.

Some producers really like to make the pitch intense, while others enjoy a slower approach. In essence, it all comes down to what idea you have for the song. For example, if your song is called “Hurricane”, you would obviously want to create a more violent drop than if your song was called “Streams”. In other words, you need to mimic the identity of the song to find the correct drop.

Yes, this is not as easy as it sounds, but then again producing Dubstep is not for everyone. All you really need to do is keep an open mind and experiment as much as you can, these things don’t happen overnight, but if you put in enough time and energy, you’ll create the perfect drop for your next song.
