Menopause – Is It Life Changing?

For many women, menopause can be life changing, emotional turmoil, and many physical symptoms as well. As the woman reaches the end of the supply of eggs with which she was born, the woman may feel a sense of loss, as she can no longer have children, may feel less attractive, and may also experience a sense of inadequacy. by some women and may feel that they have lost their identity as a woman.

The physical symptoms that women can experience can also be quite debilitating. The most common are hot flashes and night sweats. For each individual case, the severity can vary from mild hot flashes occasionally to the entire body, every 5 minutes. They can start suddenly, sometimes they start at your feet and then work their way up your body, sometimes your face will turn red. These hot flashes can also be accompanied by feelings of nausea and dizziness.

The cause of hot flashes is not fully understood, although one theory is that changes in your estrogen level can affect your hypothalamus, the gland that controls your body temperature, therefore causing your body to think that it is too hot. The answer is to cool the body by sending blood to the skin (flushing of the face and neck) and causing flushing.

Other symptoms may include vaginal dryness, mood swings, decreased libido, osteoporosis, bloating, weight gain, hair loss / thinning, and headaches.

Women struggling with many of the above symptoms are prescribed HRT (hormone replacement therapy) by their GPs.

HRT can be effective in reducing some of the symptoms of menopause; Unfortunately, when women stop taking HRT, symptoms can return for a time, which means they need to go back to HRT at a lower dose. However, HRT has also been shown to be beneficial in helping lessen the effects of osteoporosis in menopausal women.

There are other natural substances and diet changes that can be taken in conjunction with HRT to allow you to experience a more comfortable menopause.
