Diving in Bonaire, Netherlands

The license plates of every car on Bonaire said Diver’s Paradise. Does anything more need to be said? Perhaps, for those who have never been to paradise. How about a water temperature of 84 degrees and visibility of over 100 feet? Bonaire is not just a “Scuba Diver’s Paradise” because of the amazing fact that its exceptionally pristine waters are designated an official marine park, or because its calm, clear waters are the ideal environment for underwater photographers, or because it is famous for its flamingos. (numbering up to 15,000 during mating season!), but also because Bonaire offers so many other wonderful sites to behold and adventures to experience after a day of diving.

Walk through the land of the island’s 13,500-acre National Park, a wildlife sanctuary where birds, lizards, goats, and iguanas are found in their natural habitat! Mountain bike the more than 300 kilometers of trails, which consist of gentle coastal paths, unpaved back roads, and even goat trails. Go windsurfing in the calm and shallow waters of Lac Bay, an internationally known spot for windsurfers. Kayak the sheltered waters of Lac Bay or head to the miles of flats and mangroves to the south, where you can see baby fish and wildlife.

Observe Bonaire’s more than 170 bird species (80 of which are indigenous to the island). (Bonaire is also one of bonefishing enthusiasts’ best kept secrets!) Take to the water on one of Bonaire’s charter yachts. Horseback riding at one of Bonaire’s horse ranches. More low-key than its Latin-influenced older sisters, Aruba and Curacao, it’s really cool to see how Bonaire has gone to great lengths to preserve its natural resources. Do you need to say anything else now?

Oh yes, beach diving is available right on your doorstep 24/7! While there are plenty of waters in the world to dive deep below the surface of the sea, it’s always good to select a location that offers plenty of natural activities and spooky places to explore on land as well.
