FedEx and Ryder Cup’s: the good, the bad and the ugly!

Wow, the golf we’ve seen in the last few weeks has been amazing!

Starting with the year-long FedEx Cup culmination, what a resounding success it has become. Frankly, I wasn’t that enamored with it when it started, remember Tiger Woods didn’t even bother to play in one of the playoff rounds the first time it was played, and still won it!

I have to admit, I’ve become a fan of the event, as it identifies and rewards players who consistently perform throughout the season and ensures that the “big guns” stick around until the end of the season. Remember back in the old days when you could hardly get a “big name player” to appear at any event after the 4th Major of the year, unless they got a big appearance bonus. Now of course everyone wants to play, and that, folks, is great!

By the way, big kudos to Brandt Snedeker, he really did the job.

Now to the Ryder Cup!

As you know, I am British by birth… but American by choice, just like David Feherty, but not as funny! So I’m in a unique position to have a point of view on the performance of both sides.

What a pathetic American performance on Sunday!

I’m sorry to have to say it like that, but Davis Love did a lousy job!

He selected Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk as his picks and left players like Hunter Mahan off the team… duh, what the hell was he thinking. Let me tell you, it was the “Old Boys Club” at work at its best. Let’s look at the numbers, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker didn’t get a point between them, nor a half point between them in two games together and two individual games. These two alone cost the USA the Ryder Cup, and it gets worse when you add Jim Furyk.

Boy, I couldn’t stand to see Ian Poulter beating up, you know, our guys, but I sure would have liked to have him on our team!

Davis Love claimed to have had a plan and would stick to it, but “the best plans” at some point have to be changed. Why the hell would you bench Keegan Bradley and Phil after they had seriously won two rounds in a row when they were red hot?

Hey, at the end of the day, the best team won, and I for one would like to congratulate them, they deserved it. But now, let’s use this scrapyard as a base and make sure we never let sentiment or the “Old Boy System” pick our team again. Let’s pick players in shape that can get the job done!
