Running in the mud!

Almost everyone has heard of endurance racing, but have you heard of endurance racing in mud? This is the same concept, only in the mud. Obviously this excludes rubber-smelling burns, but instead you get muddy rooster tails flowing through the air!

This sport has been in the making for quite some time. We’ve found mud races in other states, like New Mexico, Iowa, California, and South Dakota, but we haven’t ventured that far. So I can’t tell you what mud racing is like outside of Texas. Someday I’ll get to some of these other races, I hope.

For now, though, I’ll stick to what I know. I’ve been to several tracks here in Texas. There is one southeast of Houston in the Bay City area. There are a couple north of Austin, one between Waco and Dallas, and several more. Unfortunately, we don’t get to these every race. However, we hit San Antonio Muddrags on almost every race. They have races every other weekend from March to the end of October.

Mud Racing is a mud drag race. The length of the tracks is shorter when running in mud, but the level of difficulty is probably more than just dragging. A mud track consists of two straight lanes, where trucks run on approximately 2 to 3 feet of mud. Running in the mud is very popular in Texas, which is why many people here call it Texas-style endurance racing. There are different types of trucks that run at these events. Standard vehicles run in mud as well as mud rails. It is a spectacular event to see!
